Frequently asked questions
Following breast conserving surgery, you may remove the outer dressing or bandage in 24-48 hours. You will usually see small strips (called steri-strips) underneath the dressing, on top of the site of the incision. These will fall off on their own or in the shower 2-4 weeks following your surgery.
You may shower after dressing removal, usually 24-48 hours following surgery. Prior to this, you may sponge-bath or use a damp cloth to cleanse the skin. Please avoid soaking the surgical site (ie. in the bathtub or swimming) for 10 days following your surgery.
We typically recommend a comfortable, breathable sports bra that can be secured via clasps or a zipper in the front following surgery. Securing the breasts in place with a well-fitted bra can help minimize movement following surgery and reduce swelling and discomfort.
Within the week of your breast surgery, we recommend following the upper body and arm exercises found on the Canadian Cancer Society "Exercises after Breast Surgery" booklet, available here:
